Mountain Lake Elopement or Adventure Wedding in Switzerland
Choosing A Different Kind of Wedding Day
When most people picture a wedding, they imagine ballrooms, seating charts, and endless details to manage. But for couples who crave intimacy, adventure, and something entirely their own, a traditional wedding often feels overwhelming. That’s why more and more couples are choosing to elope, or have adventurous, intimate weddings. Swapping the stress of guest lists and table settings for a day that’s about nothing but your love story. Keep reading to discover why you should choose a mountain lake elopement or adventure wedding in Switzerland for your own day!

Imagine turquoise water shimmering beneath alpine peaks, reflections of snow-capped mountains dancing on the surface, and the two of you standing hand in hand, promising forever to each other. Switzerland is home to countless alpine lakes, each one offering its own unique charm. Some hidden deep in forests, others nestled below glaciers, and still others perched high above valleys where cows graze and bells echo softly in the distance.
J + M’s elopement was a perfect example of the magic a mountain lake brings to a wedding or elopement day. Their day was filled with everything elopements should be—adventure, laughter, spontaneity, and romance. We began at a quiet mountain lake where their vows carried across the still water, wandered past grazing cows, bumped along on a rocky mountain car ride, and ended the day laughing together in the rain. It wasn’t “perfect” in the traditional sense, but it was perfect for them—and that’s exactly what makes lake elopements in Switzerland so unforgettable.
A Little About Me – Your Switzerland Elopement Photographer
Hi, I’m Kathryn, a Switzerland-based elopement photographer who specializes in capturing love stories in wild, breathtaking landscapes. I moved to Switzerland over 20 years ago and fell in love with its natural beauty— especially the sheer variety of landscapes packed into such a small country.

Over the years, I’ve explored trails, scouted hidden corners, and spent countless hours finding the most beautiful spots to share with couples like you. But for me, being your photographer is about more than just taking photos. I help you craft an experience that feels like your relationship. Whether that means hiking to a hidden alpine lake at sunrise, arranging a cozy mountain hut dinner after your ceremony, or simply making sure you feel supported every step of the way.
When you work with me, you don’t just get photographs. You get a guide, planner, a trail buddy, and storyteller who knows these landscapes intimately and is dedicated to making your day unforgettable.
Why Choose a Mountain Lake Elopements in Switzerland for your Elopement/Adventure Wedding?
The Symbolism of (Mountain) Lakes
Lakes have a timeless symbolism (trust me – I have a degree in Literature and Philosophy!). Their stillness reflects peace and calm, while their depths suggest mystery and strength. To stand at the edge of a lake and say your vows is to connect your love story to something bigger than yourselves. Whether you’re looking for an intimate setting tucked into the forest or a grand view framed by dramatic peaks, Switzerland’s mountain lakes offer the perfect stage for your promises.

The Variety of Backdrops in Switzerland for your Elopement
What makes Switzerland so special is the sheer diversity (and quantity) of its lakes. Some are easy to access by cable car and offer crystal-clear waters framed by alpine peaks. Others require a bit of hiking to reach, rewarding you with solitude and magic. Still others are surrounded by lush forests, creating a fairytale-like atmosphere. This variety also allows you to avoid overcrowded areas, in favour of hidden gems that only the locals (like me) know about! This way, you don’t have to worry about crowds watching your whole elopement and taking away from your intimate day. Whether you want turquoise glacial water, dramatic reflections, or complete seclusion, there’s a lake in Switzerland that matches your vision.
A Real-Life Example: J + M’s Adventure Elopement at a Stunning Swiss Mountain Lake
When J + M chose to elope at a mountain lake, they wanted both intimacy and adventure. Their ceremony took place with the calm waters as their witness and almost no people around. We walked through meadows where cows grazed peacefully, hopped into a rugged mountain car for a bumpy (and laughter-filled) ride, and ended in a spontaneous rainstorm that left everyone smiling and soaked. Their story is proof that an elopement at a mountain lake isn’t just about the place. It’s about the experience of being fully present, together, in the wild beauty of Switzerland.

Seasons & Weather – When to Plan Your Mountain Lake Elopement or Adventure Wedding in Switzerland
Summer (June–September)
Summer is the most popular season for lake elopements, and for good reason. The snow has melted from the trails, wildflowers are blooming, and the lakes are at their most vibrant turquoise. Days are long, giving us plenty of time to hike, explore, and enjoy golden evening light. This is the season for couples who want to combine adventure with comfort—warm days, accessible trails, and endless opportunities for variety in backdrops. However, this is also the time when the most popular lakes (like Oeschinensee) are the most crowded. Because of this, hiring a local photographer who knows the hidden lakes, that are equally (or more) beautiful than the more well-known ones, is key to ensuring a stress-free, intimate mountain wedding.
Autumn (Late September–October)
Autumn is one of my personal favorite times for a lake elopement. The crowds of summer have pretty much disappeared and the larch trees blaze gold against the blue water. There is nothing like it. This is also one of the clearest seasons for mountain views—less haze, dramatic light, and fewer thunderstorms. J + M’s rainy finish was in early autumn, and though the skies were gray, the atmosphere was incredibly romantic. Rain in the mountains adds texture, mood, and intimacy. It doesn’t ruin the day, it transforms it, and as a photographer, I personally prefer a bit of clouds to harsh sunlight!

Winter (December–March)
Many lakes are frozen and snow-covered in winter, which creates an entirely different kind of view. Imagine exchanging vows by a frozen lake surrounded by snow-dusted pines, then warming up with fondue in a nearby chalet. It is worth noting that accessibility can be trickier in winter and some mountain lakes are no longer reachable, thereby limiting your options for your elopement. But, if you love snow, there are plenty of incredibly unique options that are still accessible!
Spring (April–May)
Spring in Switzerland is unpredictable but beautiful. Lower-altitude lakes usually thaw early (if they even froze), and are surrounded by fresh greenery and blossoms. Higher-altitude lakes are still icy and dramatic, but accessible. Waterfalls are also at their strongest during this season, and valleys are alive with color. It’s a shoulder season that offers quieter trails and a mix of both winter and summer scenery. Combining different landscapes is a great idea during this time! In Spring, you can also avoid the crowds that start to arrive around early June.

Activities to Add to Your Mountain Lake Elopement or Adventure Wedding in Switzerland
Eloping at a lake (or even just eloping in general) doesn’t mean just showing up, saying vows, and leaving. It’s about building a day (or even multiple days) full of experiences that reflect you and your relationship. Some couples love to keep it simple—reading vows at sunrise, sharing a picnic of fresh bread, cheese, and chocolate, then taking a quiet walk around the shoreline. Others want adventure. Rowing across the lake, hiking to a ridge above for panoramic views, or even swimming if the weather is warm enough and the water isn’t too icy.
J + M’s day was filled with little activities that made it uniquely theirs. Becoming friends with the curious cows who wandered up to say hello, the laughter on the mountain car ride, the joy of walking hand in hand as the first raindrops fell, getting drinks to warm up after—all of these moments became part of their story. And that’s the beauty of lake elopements: the setting provides endless opportunities for spontaneity. If you want to know more about this, feel free to get in touch! When you book with me, I include a customized document which lists a multitude of different activities you can include on your elopement day.

What I Help With as Your Local Swiss Elopement Photographer
Planning an elopement in Switzerland from abroad can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve never been here before. That’s where I come in. Beyond photography, I guide you through every part of the elopement day process – included in all my elopement packages is:
- Location Scouting: I know which mountain lakes are accessible and when, which are crowded, and which remain hidden gems. Some of my favorite spots (like J+M’s) aren’t named online to protect them from overtourism. I share them only with my couples.
- Timeline Planning: Depending on your vision and the activities you want to include, I create a schedule that makes the most of light, avoids peak tourist hours, and, most importantly, gives you room to relax and enjoy the day.
- Weather Backups: Mountain weather is unpredictable, so I always prepare alternatives that ensure your day is beautiful no matter what.
- Vendor Recommendations: From florists to hair and makeup artists, I connect you with trusted local vendors. For this elopement, the wonderful Nuancesmakeup did hair+makeup and Chevalley Fleurs provided the gorgeous bouquet.
- Support & Guidance: Whether you’re worried about car rentals, legalities, or just want reassurance, I’m here to help and to make the process as easy as possible for you.
My goal is to make sure your elopement feels effortless and deeply personal. I want you to be able to focus on what matters: celebrating your love.
